A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

You find yourself in a dimly lit log cabin in the middle of the woods. You are starving to death. The stranger who resides there tells you that he will feed you if you defeat him in a game of cards.

Sacrifices Must Be Made is a game created for Ludum Dare 43. I produced the game code, art, and audio in 48 hours. Here's the Ludum Dare entry page!

The game should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. There is an ending so hang in there!

  • Mouse - Move Cursor and Click
  • WASD/Arrow Keys - Shift Camera View
  • SHIFT+R - Reset Level

Tools Used

  • Unity

oooooh

loved it!

great concept and atmosphere

a shame that you cant see anything past the "lest eat" even if you choose to eat the child and not yourself, but everything bout the game was great!

(+1)

Great atmosphere, cant wait for the full release!

(+1)

THIS WAS GREAT! I adore the atmosphere and the cards! I cannot wait for Inscryption, the full release.

(+3)

I'll play this again from time to time just for the card game. And I was really spooked when it closed.

I loved this game, so fun and unique and ominous! I actually became really invested in the cards, so at times I almost forgot I was playing against a forest demon and was like "damn, nice move friend! Oh wait..."

this game was good but I hope the game comes out soon.

I found an interesting glitch; when you beat a level and get to the part where you choose another card, if you press shift+R before choosing a card it will not restart the last level, instead it will send you to the next level without either of the cards that you were supposed to choose. You can do that for both times you get to choose cards, so that means playing the game without beehive/warren or elk/adder, and also no cats for some reason. I don't expect you to fix this or anything, I just thought it was interesting, and it made it more challenging to beat the game.

I can't play this. I downloaded the game onto my MacBook, and when I tried to open it, it said that I don't have permission to open the application. I own the MacBook, I checked the permission settings on it already but it hasn't worked. I looked up the problem and it said either to contact an administrator of the Mac or the owner of the file/folder, which I assume is whoever made it. Is the game just incompatible with the OS version I have? (Big Sur, 11.3.1)

Nevermind! I got it to work using a guide from a different game that had the same problem. Something about going into the terminal and executing a certain file from the package contents

are there any card games like this?? the card game itself is so fun

(+1)

so wait, why am i playing a game of death cards with this guy just to go to a length i could go to anyways without being confronted with a knife?

(+1)

Loved this! Super well done, very creepy atmosphere. Glad we never got to see the baddie...

(1 edit)

Wishlisted the full version, incredible atmosphere

(+1)

This was a fucking awesome experience.

(+5)

Well then. If I play cards with a man who wants my eyeball and hand, I might as well eat an eyeball and a hand. Anyway this was a really fun game and I really liked when I got to eat a child

How to install this game on Ubuntu 20.04?

What a great game and unique style! We really need to see more of this. I’m a big fan of the ambience and art direction. Gameplay has an addictive quality to it. I like thinking in my games. My only criticism is the lack of any real endings. I don’t need anything fancy, but it would’ve felt more complete. I understand the time crunches that come with game jams, and honestly, the game itself is so good it hardly matters. Very well done!

I really need a full version!

(+1)

I want to play a full version!

Really fun concept with a great atmosphere. Looking forward to Incryption!

Is the game finished and needs no more updates?

(+1)

Now I wish for an endless card game mode :D

(+2)

You're not you when you're hungry. ;)

(+1)

That was brilliant 😂

(+3)
It's a really good game. I play it some times and still surprise me.  Look at this!

How....?

(+1)

How the hell did that happen?

fun, full game? Horror where you get food by fighting and slowly you have enough food to survive and scavenge in the wilderness and find out why you've woken up in this strange place?

He's working on a full-scale version of the game, currently in-dev. Look in description :v

uuuuuhhh...OKAY!!

We got Gollum acting tough behind the scenes and we can eat babies at the the end?

I fucks with it.

I really loved the game :)

The atmosphere was amazing and the choosing your meal was build up through the whole duration of the game. Eventhough there arent many pieces of story I found that the little pieces that are existing are of great value, nothing is overdone and in my book thats a good thing. The whole experience seemed kind of short though and could be the tutorial to a really great game.

I would really love to see more cards in the future and a freeplay or even multiplayer option aswell as a longer storymode (perhaps involving escaping the thing and run into another oponent).

Some cards you could add:

  1. An eagle who pushes away the oposing card (much like the elk does for himself, just forcing away the enemy)
  2. maybe some kind of blood card that boost the attack of a predator card
  3. a spider that prevents one enemy card from attacking via its net in the enemy turn, after it entered the field

Great atmosphere!  I love all the sounds of the game and once I got the hang of how it worked it was really fun to play!  I would really love to see more of this from you in the future!

Slight Spoilers: I've played this game a few times through now, haven't sacrificed anything with the knife. Won twice, chose different options each time.

INCREDIBLE atmosphere! Sfx for the other guy gave me chills. I haven't felt so immersed in a video game in ages. Please expand on this, I'd love to know more about what's going on, or even just more cardplay! Bless you for this short, yet intriging game.

well, now I'm hungry

Absolutely chilling atmosphere with legitimately fun card gameplay. I'll be coming back to this one to test out the cards I didn't use (never did play the Elk), once I get over the ending.

SPOILER ALERT

At first, when given the opportunity I went ahead and clicked the knife to tip the scales. I bid an eye, and half of the screen was plunged into darkness. I lost, full of regret and after softly saying "oh no, oh no" about a dozen times. Apparently you can lose a hand as well, so I guess that's something to look forward to in a later play. Awful.

Really fun game! I thought of a fan card too.

The Sly Fox

1 sacrifice required to play. 0 damage, 4 HP. And it cannot take more than 1 damage from a single attack.

Wait, was the game really that hard? Cause i beat it without sacrificing anything. Really fun game tho, wish it was longer. The creepy atmoshpere was really nice as well. The game really needs a menu that lets you restart, becasue i didn't realise you lose half your screen the first time and clicked it even tho i didn't need to do so. Also a play again button after you finish would be great.

Shift+R restarts

(+1)

That third level was hard.  Actually think that it might be strategically better to chop your hand off when you're winning rather than when you're losing, lol.

Basically, this is what Hand of Fate should have been.  Please expand on this.

i suck so i can't beat it, but great game!!

Fantastic atmosphere. Loved it.

Fantastic wee game filled with mystery, atmosphere and great story telling. Absolutely loved how easy it was to pick up, learn, and play. Visually appealing, my favourite card to play was the Cat; a great nod to their many lives. Also absolutely loved the sacrifice I got to make. Beautiful work.

I also saw Vinny play this. It's a cool little game, but there's so much juicy potential here for a bigger game. The card game aspect of it is cool and neat and easy to pick up, while the sacrifice aspect adds an interesting layer of morbid strategy. And the narrative layer is perfect, you're trying to figure out who you are, who the stranger is... it adds a lot to the game. I'd love to see more of it.

(+2)

Watched Vinny Vinesauce play this, and I wanna drill my head open now. He is TERRIBLE AT MATH AND LOGIC!

nice lil yugioh/pokemon hybrid you got going here, looking forward to fture developments

You too, huh! Man, I wonder how much people Vinny will attract to this game. I was really impressed by it played. Simple but entertaining.

I would say it has a bit of Hearthstone elements in there, too

Awesome game!
